Outdoor Education Experiences for Groups & Students

From guided hikes on our 12+ miles of trails, to learning how to build the ultimate camp fire and outdoor shelter, we have something for most group sizes and interests.

What to Expect

Themed Hikes
Explore our 100-acre property.

Our team will guide you through our beautiful forest trails through hands-on experiences and learning.

  • Length of Experience: About 1.5 hours (per themed hike).
  • Suggested Age: Ages 7+ recommended.
  • Parents/Chaperone: Adults must accompany youth participants (do not have to fully participate).

Explore the Themes...

Participants have a bingo board of different plants found on the property. Each group or individual tries to identify enough plants to get Bingo!

Hike a loop around the orange/yellow trail while learning about planets, comets, and our solar system. You’ll even calculate the comparable distances of the planets at the ratio of the yellow trail!

Using magnifying glasses you’ll ID insects, learn about pollinators, and play a game modeling the roles in a bee hive!

Hike through the different woodland types and prairie, discussing the specific environmental conditions that allow each habitat to thrive.

2. Environmental Lessons
Learn about the unique environment around you.

Lead by an outdoor expert, our lessons include instruction and a hands on activities and crafts including worksheets to accompany each lesson.

  • Length of Experience: About 2 hours (per lesson).
  • Suggested Age: Ages 7+ recommended.
  • Parents/Chaperone: Adults must accompany youth participants (do not have to fully participate).

Explore the Lessons...

Learn about the different birds in Wisconsin that match the habitats respectively: forest, pond, prairie, and marsh.

Participants go on a hike and learn about WI mammal camouflage and adaptation to WI winters (migrate, adapt, hibernate, or die). Includes a game of ‘Camouflage’ in the woods!

Hands on experience with natural artifacts and instruction on animal engineers and plant structures.

Learn how to identify signs and tracks of different animals. You’ll even solve a sample mystery and then create mysteries of your own for your group to solve.

Wilderness Skills
Learn practical outdoor skills.

Come and learn practical and fun wilderness skills! Each session covers two skills.

  • Length of Experience: About 3 hours (covers 2 skills).
  • Suggested Age: Ages 7+ for Compass Navigation, Shelter Building, and Survival Skills Game. Ages 11+ recommended for Fire Building.
  • Parents/Chaperone: Adults must accompany youth participants (do not have to fully participate).

Explore the Skills...

Participants are taught bow drill techniques, as well as wood gathering and fire building skills. A variety of optional activities include competitions to burn through a string before another team, boil water for hot chocolate, or campfire cooking.

Participants are taught to use a compass and navigate a landscape, then given challenges. Challenges may include a scavenger hunt, race, or navigation.

Participants are shown common shelters and given tools to build one of their own!

Learn about wilderness survival skills for the Wisconsin environment (shelters, fire building, medicinal plants, etc.) and “play” a game to test your new found skills.

Hiking & Biking Passes

Take your family on a self-guided themed hike! Backpacks are available on a first come first serve basis providing ID books, bug catching containers, magnifying glasses and environmental education about the theme of your choice.

Or, pick up the pace on miles of mountain biking trails offering beginner, intermediate and expert levels.

Questions

We accept all ages! But we do have age suggestions for each experience.

  • Themed hikes – age 7 & up recommended
  • Environmental Lessons – age 7 & up recommended
  • Wilderness Skills – map and compass, shelter building & survival game – ages 7 and up, fire building – ages 11 and up

Physical distance is afforded in all activities. Participants will be able to engage with each other in meaningful ways while maintaining personal space. While meeting CDC recommendations we are still able to offer a wide variety of hands-on experiences.

  • Participants are asked to maintain healthy practices, including hand washing and sanitizing.
  • Larger groups are distributed into smaller groups and matched with a single facilitator for their program to minimize contact with multiple persons.
  • Contact with materials and gear is limited to items that can be easily sanitized and items that can be assigned for single person use.
  • Masks and gloves are provided for participant use and will be required indoors and when in proximity to our staff.
  • When groups are outdoors and engaged in an activity that affords distance between them and our facilitator, groups may follow their own PPE guidelines.
  • Activities are flexible and can be arranged to fit the comfort level of the group.

Yes! Bug spray and sunscreen are provided by the staff.

Dress appropriate for the weather and for being outside for the duration of the program. Closed toe shoes are required. You may bring a water bottle and snacks if you’d like.

Reservations for our zipline tour or high ropes course are highly recommended and can be made at the same time as the reservation for the Outdoor Education program.
